The influence of Social Media on the Socio- economic, political and social development in Nigeria.

Social media has evolved and revolutionized the world and the people in it this 21st century. Advanced technology has influenced lifestyle, economic systems and more. The advent of social media has provided a platform for showcasing ideas, implementing creativity and displaying entrepreneurship skills.

Statistics has shown that 16 million Nigerians visit facebook every month, which indicates that Nigeria has the biggest facebook Market in Africa.

According to Webflick, Nigeria has the 7th most used internet users in the world. This shows that in many ways, social media has influenced the Norms, culture and overall system in Nigeria.

Social media made it possible for us to be armed with real time communication, that is fundamentally changing our planet. It has aided many businesses and created a direct link to costumers.

In the economic sector, social media has created a platform for companies, industries and banks to implement transactions easily. Online transactions can be performed with ease from wherever and whenever. Bills are paid virtually and work is made easy. Companies/organization are easily channel information to their prospective audience via virtual means.
Job opportunties, new offers, gigs, e.t.c. Social media has created a space for small scale businesses to thrive.. giving start-ups an easier platform to expose their brands and connect with their prospective customers.

New jobs have evolved from social media. Jbs like; Blogging, Digital Marketing/Social media Advertising, Online Entertainment, especially in the area of comedy. Big personalities like Linda Ikeji, Noble Igwe, Omojuwa Adebola Williams, Uchenna Eze has created huge businesses from Social Media.
Not to mention the advent of E- commerce. Shopping has been made easy, that you can shop and window shop, from your home. Brands like payporte, Yudala, Konga and Jumia have taken advantage of that space.

Uber and Taxify has relieved us of the stress standing and waiting for cabs at the roadside. Cab drivers can come to our doorstep by just a few taps of our phones.


Politics has taken a different turn, since social media gained grounds in Nigeria. Political Campaigns are now more effective, as social media has made it possible for content to be published and broadcasted to millions of people in real time, at little or no cost. Social media advertising has proven to be very effective during political campaigns. Public opinions have become more effective as there are no bridges and barriers between average citizens and governing personnels.

Social media as created an easy means for unifying power among citizens to fight for a common cause. Rallies, campaigns and Protests can be planned spontaneously on social media and in a short time, implemented physically.

Reality TV shows like Project fame, Gulder Ultimate Search, The Voice, Project Fame and more, rely on social media for revenue. Fan base, reviews and results are also tracked from social media.

Through social media, knowledge is on high increase, as it is now accessible to everyone who is willing to learn. Business have been built and SME have gained grounds through social media. However, we cannot neglect the vices of social media. Cyber crime and internet fraud is also on the rise.
